Cypress Trees
Posted On 17-12-2009 , 12:04 PM
Cypress trees are very nice trees to add to your gardens. They have a natural scented oil very much like a cedar. When I first introduced these trees to my garden's, I did not realize that they are a natural bug repellant. Cypress trees are very hardy. They grow in places with very poor soil, wind and salt. That is why many people plant them along there driveways, or in locations where you would never think a tree would exist. These trees are known to exceed 100 year life span. They very rarely get any kind of bug infestation. There meaning is some people find superstitious, but in other countries they are popular for good luck. Dandeny!

Boston Ferns
Posted On 14-12-2009 , 8:31 AM
Boston ferns are a beautiful accent to your home. It took me a long time to figure out the proper care of these plants. I learned that they like to be watered once a week letting soil completely dry before next watering. Too much watering, and the ferns turns rusty in color, dry up and die. Boston ferns also like it in a cool place. They do not like it in a place that is too warm, they also like moderate sunlight. I also learned they like plant food. So depending on the size of the fern, I use jobe fertilizer sticks about once every six months In my plant. I put four, because she is a big fern. Boston ferns also like a light misting every other day. They thrive in humidity. In the summer when there is no more chance of frost I put my plant outside. Now in the summer I give my fern some miracle grow every two weeks. Last spring when I put my fern outside she was 1/3 of the size she is now. This week I am going to have to transplant my fern to a bigger pot. She now measures four feet in height. This is my only successful fern I have been able to grow. Believe me you, I lost a lot of ferns not knowing how to care for them. Dandeny!

Poinsettia's
Posted On 10-12-2009 , 10:51 AM
Poinsettia's are always a Christmas favourite. These plants are not poisonous as some people seem to believe. They are however not a very good plant to leave exposed to young children. If they touch it they might get a rash. If they should happen to injest it they might vomit, get cramps or diaherria. If you love poinsettia's and have small children just keep them out of harms way. This also applies to you household pets as well. I hope that this answered some of you questions. So enjoy your poinsettia just use caution around the little ones and your pets.

Snow Day Gardening
Posted On 09-12-2009 , 11:58 AM
On days in which you cannot go anywhere because of the snow, this is when your house hold gardening projects come in handy. I like to go in my sun room and work on my plants. I take the time to give them some tender loving care that I do not always get to do on a day to day basis. Sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of just looking at them. I look at my gardening books and try to decide how I will plan my next spring projects. It takes a lot of time to plan a flower garden or vegetable garden. I like to put it all on paper. I look for plants that like to grow in our area. This year I planted snow pansies. Yes! that is right they thrive in the snow. They are so cute. They add color to your gardens even in the winter months. Gardening does not have to stop because of the snow. The snow does not stop because of the gardening right? Have a nice snow day!
